What Is a Student Learning Assessment & Progress Tracker?
A student progress tracker is a simple record-keeping system that turns raw test scores into something a teacher can actually act on. Instead of a stack of separate mark sheets for every quiz and test, the marks sit in one place next to each student's target grade, so you can see at a glance who is ahead, who is on track, and who needs a closer look. This page gives you that system as a free, browser-based tool — no spreadsheet setup, no software installation, and no account required.
How Does a Student Progress Tracker Work?
The idea behind tools like this is straightforward: every assessment result is converted into a percentage, compared against a grading scale, and then compared again against the grade the teacher has set as a target for that student. Platforms built for schools, including Pupil Progress, popularised this general approach of pairing current attainment with a target and a trend line. This tracker follows that same general workflow with its own original design, layout and calculation code — it is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or built from that platform's software.
How to Track Student Learning Progress
Progress only becomes visible once you have more than one data point. As you add assessments across a term, the tracker lines them up by date and looks at the very first recorded percentage against the most recent one. A student moving from 62% to 81% over four assessments is flagged as improving; a student sliding from 78% down to 60% is flagged as declining. With only one assessment on record, there simply isn't enough history yet to call a trend either way, and the tool says so rather than guessing.
How to Use This Assessment Tracker
- Fill in your class details in the Setup section (optional but useful for printed reports).
- Add your students in the Students tab, including an optional target grade for each one.
- Create the subjects you teach in the Subjects tab.
- Create each quiz, test or exam in the Assessments tab, with its subject and maximum marks.
- Go to Enter Marks and fill in the obtained marks for each student and assessment.
- Open the Dashboard tab to review class, student, subject and assessment analysis.
- Use Filters & At-Risk to find students who need extra attention.
- Print or export a report from the Reports tab whenever you need a physical or CSV copy.
How Student Performance Is Calculated
Each assessment result is converted to a percentage using (Obtained Marks ÷ Maximum Marks) × 100.
If you leave assessment weights blank, the tracker adds up total obtained marks against total maximum marks
across every assessment. If you assign a weight percentage to your assessments, it instead calculates a
weighted average, giving heavier assessments like a final exam more influence over the overall grade than a
short quiz. The percentage is then matched against a single, central grading scale (90%+ = A+, 80–89%
= A, 70–79% = B, 60–69% = C, 50–59% = D, below 50% = F by default) to produce a letter grade.

How to Identify Students Below Target
Once a target grade is set, the tracker ranks both the current grade and the target grade on the same scale and compares them directly. If the current grade sits below the target, the student is marked "Below Target" and the percentage gap to the next grade boundary is shown, so you know roughly how much improvement is needed. Combined with the "Needs Attention" view, this makes it quick to build a short list of students who could benefit from extra support before the next assessment.

Is this Student Progress Tracker free to use?
Yes. The tool is completely free, with no sign-up, subscription or hidden limits.
Does my student data get uploaded anywhere?
No. All calculations run in your own browser. Nothing is sent to a server unless you explicitly choose to save data to this browser's local storage on your own device.
Will my data be there if I close the tab?
By default, no — data lives only for the current session. Use the "Save to This Browser" option in the Reports tab if you want it to persist on this device.
Can I change the grading scale?
The default scale (A+ to F) is defined in one place inside the tool's code, so a developer can adjust the grade boundaries for the whole tracker at once.
What happens if I enter marks greater than the maximum marks?
The tracker blocks the entry and shows a clear message asking you to correct the value before it is saved.
Can I track more than one subject at a time?
Yes. Add as many subjects as you teach, and assign each assessment to the correct subject.
How is "Improving" or "Declining" decided?
The tracker compares a student's first and most recent assessment percentages. A meaningful increase is "Improving," a meaningful decrease is "Declining," and small changes are "Stable." A single assessment is marked "Insufficient Data."
Can I import my existing student list?
Yes. Use the CSV import in the Reports tab with columns Roll, Name, StudentID and TargetGrade.
Can I print a report for one student only?
Yes. Choose the student in the Reports tab and select "Print Student Progress Report."
Does this tool work on mobile phones?
Yes. The layout adapts to smaller screens, and tables that don't fit become horizontally scrollable without affecting the rest of the page.
Is this the same as Pupil Progress?
No. This is an independent, original tool inspired only by the general idea of comparing performance against targets. It uses none of Pupil Progress's code, design or branding.
