An age calculator is a tool that works out the interval between two calendar dates — usually a date of birth and today's date — and expresses it in years, months and days. It removes the manual work of counting days across months of different lengths and leap years.

How Age Is Calculated

This calculator counts age the way it's conventionally done in most Western countries: age increases by one on each birthday. Someone who has lived 3 years and 11 months is 3 years old, turning 4 exactly one month later.

Some traditions count age differently — for example, treating a newborn as already one year old and increasing everyone's age together on a fixed calendar date rather than an individual birthday. This calculator does not use that system; it strictly follows the birthday-based method.

Leap Years and February 29 Birthdays

Leap years are handled automatically: the day dropdown allows February 29 only in years that actually have one. For someone born on February 29, this calculator's next-birthday countdown treats February 28 as the observed birthday in non-leap years — a common convention, though not the only one in use.

Age on a Specific Date

Need your age (or someone else's) on a date other than today — for a legal document, an eligibility check, or a past or future event? Set the "Age at the Date of" field to that date instead of today's date. The calculator will reject the calculation if that date falls before the date of birth.

A Note on Months-and-Days Calculations

Because months have different lengths, the "months and days" figure between two dates can be calculated more than one reasonable way, particularly when the start date falls near month-end. For example, from February 28 to March 31, counting a full month as February 28 → March 28 leaves a remainder of 3 days (1 month, 3 days), while treating both dates as month-end equivalents gives exactly 1 month. This calculator consistently uses the first method — counting to the same day-of-month in the next month — so results stay predictable across all date ranges.
