What Is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple measurement calculated from a person's height and weight. It is widely used as a general screening tool to estimate whether someone has a healthy body weight for their height, and to classify individuals as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese. While BMI does not directly measure body fat, it is a useful and low-cost starting point for assessing overall health risk at a population level.

BMI Categories for Adults (WHO Standard)

Classification BMI Range (kg/m²)
Severe Thinness< 16
Moderate Thinness16 – 17
Mild Thinness17 – 18.5
Normal18.5 – 25
Overweight25 – 30
Obese Class I30 – 35
Obese Class II35 – 40
Obese Class III> 40

This classification is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for adults aged 20 and above, for both men and women.

BMI for Children and Teens (Age 2–20)

For children and teenagers, BMI is interpreted differently — using age- and gender-specific percentiles rather than fixed ranges, following CDC guidelines:

Category Percentile Range
Underweight< 5%
Healthy weight5% – 85%
At risk of overweight85% – 95%
Overweight> 95%

The BMI Formula

BMI is calculated by dividing weight by the square of height. In metric units:

BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ Height² (m)

In US units, the formula includes a conversion factor of 703:

BMI = 703 × Weight (lb) ÷ Height² (in)

BMI Prime and Ponderal Index Explained

BMI Prime is the ratio of a person's BMI to the upper limit of the "normal" BMI range (25 kg/m²). A BMI Prime of exactly 1.0 means a person is right at the upper edge of the normal range — values below 0.74 indicate underweight, and values above 1.2 indicate obesity.

Ponderal Index (PI) is similar to BMI but uses the cube of height instead of the square, which makes it more reliable for very tall or very short individuals, where standard BMI calculations can be misleading.

Health Risks of Being Overweight

Carrying excess weight is associated with a range of serious health conditions, including high blood pressure, elevated LDL ("bad") cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, certain cancers, and an overall increased risk of mortality compared to those with a healthy BMI.

Health Risks of Being Underweight

Being underweight carries its own risks, such as malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies, anemia, osteoporosis, weakened immune function, growth and development issues in children, reproductive complications, and a higher risk of surgical complications. In some cases, being underweight can be linked to an underlying medical condition, so it's worth discussing with a doctor if the cause isn't clear.

Limitations of BMI

BMI is a useful screening tool, but it isn't perfect. It measures excess weight rather than excess body fat directly, and doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, age, sex, or body composition. Highly muscular individuals and athletes may show a higher BMI despite having low body fat, while older adults may have more body fat than younger adults at the same BMI. For this reason, BMI should be used alongside other health indicators rather than as a standalone diagnosis — that said, it remains reasonably accurate for roughly 90–95% of the general population.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: Is this BMI Calculator free to use?
Yes, it's completely free and works instantly in your browser with no signup required.

Q2: Does this calculator work for children?
You can enter ages from 2–120, but keep in mind that BMI interpretation for children and teens (2–20 years) is based on age- and gender-specific percentiles rather than the fixed adult categories shown here.

Q3: What is a healthy BMI?
For most adults, a BMI between 18.5 and 25 kg/m² is considered within the healthy weight range.

Q4: Can BMI be wrong for muscular people?
Yes. Because BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, very muscular individuals such as athletes or bodybuilders may show a higher BMI even though their body fat percentage is low.

Q5: What's the difference between BMI and BMI Prime?
BMI is measured in kg/m², while BMI Prime is a simple ratio showing how far your BMI is from the upper limit of the normal range (25 kg/m²), making it easier to compare across different reference standards.
